Acquiring Italian Citizenship: A Last Resort?
The recent changes to the Italian citizenship law have disrupted the plans of many people, causing their dream of acquiring Italian citizenship by descent to vanish.
Things may still change, however, as things stand, there is still a possible path towards Italian citizenship, that some of you could consider.
If your parents or grandparents were Italian citizens and were unable to pass their Italian citizenship onto you, you could acquire Italian citizenship after two years of legal residence in Italy.
This means that you need to move permanently to Italy with a valid visa, as any other non-EU citizen, and pay taxes in Italy as any other resident in Italy.
After two years, provided that you can prove your Italian lineage, you can apply for Italian citizenship (art.9, c.1, lett. a) L.91/92).
This article is not exhaustive and is a guidance only.
